If you’re reading this, you’re officially a true fan! Music has always been part of who I am. I’ve always loved experimenting different sounds, different genres, each evoking something new, something real. I found joy in exploring them all. I threw myself into countless projects, started many of my own, and poured everything into the creative process. But somewhere along the way, things shifted. I went from being an independent artist with complete freedom to feeling like a puppet in an industry that didn’t feel like mine. Over time, I lost the reason why I make music. I lost myself. In 2012, I stepped away from the industry to live, breathe, and experience the world beyond music. During that time, I launched an initiative called Music Edu 4.0, advocating for music production courses across China, and I also trained as a yoga instructor. Deep down, I knew music would return when my heart was ready to feel again. My mom was one of the greatest guzheng players of her generation in China. Growing up, I thought traditional Chinese music was boring. I idolized Western music icons and didn’t want to follow in her footsteps. But she always told me I had a gift on the guzheng. Apparently, when she was pregnant with me, she practiced eight hours a day for her concerts, and I was kicking along in her womb even before I was born. During the pandemic, I picked up the guzheng again, and it resonated with me in a way I never expected. With the rise of social media, I could finally bypass the gatekeepers and share my music, my way. I stripped everything down. Started from scratch. Cut out the noise — no expectations, no distractions. Just me, a T-shirt, and music in my studio - getting inspired, feeling, vibing, creating. I got to the bare bones of music and let it speak for itself. I opened myself to the universe, asking: Who am I? That question led me to a new version of myself. Everything I’ve absorbed in music over the years is still alive in me, and now I’m ready to share this next chapter of my creative journey. I am so much more comfortable in my own skin after all I’ve experienced. I know my place in the world. I’m not chasing stardom or fame. I’m doing this because it’s who I am. I’m a human being on this culture-intertwined planet, living on borrowed time, just like you. My concept album "The Silent Runner: 33" is a metaphor for a hidden journey, a sound not widely explored, for those seeking something beyond the conventional, ready to challenge the norm. My name is Cici Zhu, and I make music on my own terms.
